Men have to lead.Men are strong.Men never show weakness.Men never cry. These notions on masculinity can be harmful to others and those men who follow them I interviewed 10 different people, friends and strangers, about how they define and perform masculinity. We talked about their role models, their own insecurities, their vulnerable moments and eye-opening experiences via Zoom. These conversations showed that masculinity doesn’t exist as a singular concept. Multiple masculinities exist as different interpretations of intersectional masculinity. During the pandemic I took photos of 10 interviewees in their most masculine and their most self-expressive outfit via FaceTime &amp; Zoom. We discussed the relationship of the act of dressing, fashion,&nbsp; gender expression and emotional repression.Based on the conversation I am creating a menswear collection. Within in my bachelor project I am exploring which role fashion/clothing plays in perpetuation of gender stereotypes and gender expression and how design can contribute to a contemporary perspective on masculinity. It also explores the contruction of self by the individual of (South) East Asian origin socialized in a Western society being confronted with racist stereotypes in everyday life. The collection draws inspiration from conversations with photographer Irma Fadhila, Thanh Thu Nguyen and talks at events like I am not a fortune cookie. One’s self perception is heavily influenced by the perception through others. The collection appropriates the “Asian” clichées and amplifying them ad absurdum to challenge the eye of the spectator.Mama, I love you is especially dedicated to all women of (S)EA decent who In order to counter the negative psychological effects of the pandemic, we propose a novel artistic installation which aims to apply the psycho-social benefits of dance within a context of human-machine interaction. To this end, we created a prototype which comprises a kinetic sculpture which responds to human subjects by detecting and mimicking their body movements. The sculpture consists of polystyrene foam elements draped in fabric to resemble a human silhouette and attached to stepper motors above. The human subject’s movements are tracked by a Kinect sensor which transmits the movements to a Rhino/Grasshopper interface where they are further processed to be executed by the stepper motors through a hardware setup. Kinetic ability is endowed to the structure by triangulating the placement of three motors for each foam component, where the motors collectively move the elements in space. Though the social, sensory, emotional and cognitive aspects of an interaction with the installation could not be investigated due to pandemic-related social restrictions, our project demonstrates a novel endeavor which combines art, technology and insights from research in an explorative manner. The collection pieces presented are part of a capsule collection. It focuses on functionality and versatility. The single pieces come in few variations with extension packages. Same clothes can be worn to different occassions and changed in functionality through zippers or straps. The exhibition Another Matter explores new ways of relating to the more-than-human and inquires into the social, material, and aesthetic conditions of the so-called Anthropocene. The exhibited works examine matters of concern beyond anthropocentrism, following Donna Haraway’s call for tentacular thinking. As an aperture towards new understandings, it brings together artifacts, sketches, notes, and vignettes from a range of ongoing research processes.Presented as an assemblage of in-progress works ranging from video- and installation-based to sculpture and painting, the exhibition embraces the potential of the unfinished to open up new discourses and pose continuously new questions. The exhibition is developed by the UdK Experimental Film and Media Art Class with the curatorial support of Vanina Saracino.
